Apr 07, 2025

From the UK to the USA - made easy!

Thinking of relocating or heading stateside for a new adventure — and bringing your pet along? At SkyPaws UK, we help pets travel safely and comfortably all over the world, and the US is one of the most popular destinations for our clients. But travelling to America with a dog or cat isn’t as simple as buying a plane ticket — there are strict rules to follow, especially with recent changes to CDC regulations.

Here’s what you need to know to make the journey smooth and stress-free.

1. Check the Latest CDC Rules

As of recent updates, the US has placed extra restrictions on dogs entering from countries deemed “high risk” for rabies. The UK is currently on the "low risk" list, however this still means your dog will need a CDC Dog Import Permit, and meet strict vaccination, microchip, and documentation requirements. Cats are not currently subject to the same CDC restrictions, but they must still meet general health and import requirements.

At SkyPaws UK, we stay on top of these constantly evolving rules and guide you through the process from start to finish.

2. Vaccinations & Vet Checks

Dogs entering the US must be at least six months old, microchipped, and have a valid rabies vaccination certificate that meets CDC standards. They must also have spent the previous 6 months prior to travel, in a "low risk" rabies country.

We work closely with trusted vets to ensure your pet’s documents, vaccinations, and health checks are 100% compliant with US entry rules.

3. Flights and Crates

The US has strict airline requirements for pet travel, and not all airlines accept pets, especially on certain routes or during extreme weather. We only work with trusted, pet-friendly carriers and use the most direct and comfortable routes.

Your pet will need an IATA-compliant travel crate that allows them to stand, turn, and lie down. We build bespoke, hand-built, wooden crates to fit your pet perfectly — and even guide you through crate training so your pet feels safe and secure on the flight.

4. Arrival in the US

Pets arriving in the US may need to land at specific approved airports depending on their documents and origin. Some dogs may be required to undergo CDC inspection upon arrival, or even spend time in a CDC-approved facility if documents aren’t in order.

That’s why it’s essential to have everything perfectly prepared in advance — and that’s exactly what we handle for you.

5. We Handle It All — So You Don’t Have To
